Our History

The James family started Lexington Furniture Company in 1963 as Lexington Wholesale Furniture. The business was in the heart of downtown Lexington, Kentucky, and occupied 40,000 square feet on land that is now the site of Rupp Arena and Heritage Hall.

Hugh James, the current owner, bought the business from his father in 1984. He and a business partner owned the business, called Lexington Furniture and Oriental Rug Gallery, until James bought the furniture side of the company in 2005.

In 1995, Lexington Furniture expanded its business nationwide by advertising in several major magazines. Consumers could now order direct from the factory and have their furniture delivered in their home anywhere in the United States. Again, the same philosophy, which had guided the business thus far, still applied: good value, great prices and excellent service. At the same time, Lexington Furniture Company was one of the first to make its presence on the internet, thereby expanding its sales nationally.

Lexington Furniture Company remains one of the leaders in the furniture business. Lexington Furniture is heading into its seventh decade of business, offering the highest quality of furniture at more than competitive pricing. It provides award-winning customer service with qualified sales associates and interior designers.

Hugh James

Owner

Hugh has been working with Lexington Furniture since 1977 when he joined his father in the family business. The family moved to Lexington in 1955, and Hugh graduated from Lafayette High School in 1965. After earning a degree in business administration from the University of Kentucky in 1969, Hugh had a short stint in the U.S. Army. He then practiced law for awhile after earning his law degree at the University of Louisville.

“The goal of Lexington Furniture has always been the same,” Hugh said.  “Sell the best quality furniture in the marketplace at the best price. We couple that with excellent customer service, giving us a winning combination.”

“As I start my 47th year, the one thing that is the most important to me is that we have the best customers in the world. We are now servicing third generation customers. That is really something to be proud about.”

Hugh and his wife have two children, a son who lives near Atlanta and a daughter who lives in New York City. He also has two golden retrievers, Duke and Lucy. His twin sister lives in Greenville, S.C.
